Lance Cpl. Coleman MacDonald, a rifleman with Company G, Battalion Landing Team, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, prepares a Combat Rubber Raiding Craft during training inside the well deck of the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1), off the coast of Okinawa, Japan, Sept. 2, 2018. MacDonald, a native of Spokane, Washington, is a former minor league hockey player and defenseman for the Spokane Braves and the Grand Forks Border Bruins. He graduated from Mt. Spokane High School before his hockey career – he enlisted in the Marine Corps in October 2016. Marines with Company G, part of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit’s Ground Combat Element, train for sea-based amphibious operations using small inflatable boats, called Combat Rubber Raiding Craft. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible force ready to perform a wide-range of military operations across the Indo-Pacific region.
