Sgt. Nicholas Smith, an airframe mechanic with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 262 (Reinforced), works inside the fuselage of an MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor aircraft in the hangar bay aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1), off the coast of Okinawa, Japan, Sept. 2, 2018. Smith, a native of Mechanicsburg, Ohio, graduated from Mechanicsburg High School in 2010 before enlisting the same year. VMM-262 (Rein.) is the Aviation Combat Element for the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and specializes in tiltrotor and rotary-wing troop transport, close-air support and fixed-wing attack support. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible force ready to perform a wide-range of military operations across the Indo-Pacific region.
