U.S. Navy Rear Adm. David J. Smith, of Urbana, Ill., expresses his appreciation for the dedication shown by sailors throughout Afghanistan during the Navy birthday ceremony at the International Security Assistance Force Headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan, Oct. 13. In addition to specialized units like the Navy Seals and seabees, nearly 2,300 U.S. sailors are serving in Afghanistan in individual slots alongside their sister service members and international counterparts. Their contributions are seen and felt throughout Afghanistan as they fill critical roles in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Smith serves as the Combined Joint Surgeon for ISAF.
