U.S. Navy Rear Adm. David J. Smith, left, of Urbana, Ill., and U.S. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Jessika Swartout, right, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., make the first slice in the cake during the Navy birthday ceremony at the International Security Assistance Force Headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan, Oct. 13. Following tradition, Smith was the oldest sailor at the ceremony and Swartout the youngest. In addition to specialized units like the Navy seals and seabees, nearly 2,300 U.S. sailors are serving in Afghanistan in individual slots alongside their sister service members and international counterparts. Their contributions are seen and felt throughout Afghanistan as they fill critical roles in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Smith, who deployed from the Pentagon, serves as the Combined Joint Surgeon for ISAF, and Swartout, who deployed from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, serves as a research production specialist with ISAF headquarters.
