Explosive Ordinance Disposal Chief Petty Officer Matthew Ludwig of Greenville, S.C., shares a laugh with Mr. Harold Hilts, a Navy veteran at Renown Health's Monaco Ridge during Navy Week Reno. Hilts served on the U.S.S. Hornet (CV-12) as the rear radio operator on a Douglass SDB Dauntless dive bomber during World War II. He participated in several renowned campaigns, including the battle of Okinawa and the sinking of the Imperial Japanese Navy Battleship Yamato. Ludwig, part of Explosive Ordinance Disposal Group One out of San Diego, was one of many Sailors in town for Navy Week. Navy Week programs serve as the U.S. Navy's principal outreach effort into areas of the country that lack a significant Navy presence, helping Americans understand that their Navy is deployed around the world, around the clock, ready to defend America at all times.
