JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (May 4, 2018) Ensign Katherine Iyengar, a nurse at Naval Hospital Jacksonville’s maternal infant unit, washes her hands before seeing a patient. Iyengar, a native of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, says, “Sanitation is the first line of defense against infection.” May 5 is World Hand Hygiene Day, highlighting the role of hand hygiene in infection prevention. Clinicians use handwashing (with soap and water), antiseptic hand wash, antiseptic hand rub (alcohol-based hand sanitizer), or surgical hand antisepsis – based on the circumstances and guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
