Lt. Cmdr. Thomas Barlow, a U.S. Navy doctor (3rd from left), and 1st Lt. Priscila Tomy Ribeiro, a Brazilian medical officer (2nd from left), clean the gunshot wound in the boy’s hand. After the injury, the boy’s family had hailed NAsH Soares de Meirelles, which was passing along the river, and had used a small boat to bring him to the ship. Barlow is a member of a team of five U.S. Navy doctors who are engaging in a month-long humanitarian mission up the Amazon River.
