U.S. Army Spc. Paul Swerda, an infantryman assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, center, reviews training with Iraqi army instructors following a training exercise as part of Tadreeb al Shamil at Forward Operating Base Normandy, Iraq, March 23. As a junior enlisted soldier, Swerda, a native of Tucson, Ariz., serving his first deployment, said the opportunity to mentor and train Iraqi soldiers helps him build his own skills as well. After almost a year serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and then Operation New Dawn, Swerda and fellow soldiers of 1st Bn., 27th Inf. Regt., part of 2nd Advise and Assist Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, transitioned teaching duties of Tadreeb al Shamil courses to Iraqi cadre as they prepare to take full control of IA training.
