Mohammad Karzim, fire chief of the Afghan Fire Department, observes two fire fighter recruits as they put out a trailer fire during a live-fire exercise Tuesday. In addition to their normal fire gear, the recruits had breathing apparatuses and face masks which enabled them to enter the burning building and attack the fire at the source. Until recently, Afghan fire fighters used a "surround and drown" approach because they lacked the necessary equipment to go into the burning structure safely.
