The headstone of John S. Stokes, Chief Master-at-Arms, United States Navy, stands out amongst others beside him.
Stokes was on board the armored cruiser USS New York when he jumped overboard and ultimately saved the life of a fellow Sailor which resulted in the Medal of Honor being awarded to him on July 29, 1899.
Stokes is now laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
