Sgt. Gavin Jenkins, the maintenance management chief, and Cpl. Margarito Perez, a supply clerk, both with 1st Marine Division (Forward), raise the Afghan flag during morning colors in front of the 1st MarDiv(Fwd) headquarters, Dec. 4. Also raised were the Marine Corps flag and the United States of America’s stars and stripes. Around the 1870’s, during the Mexican War and American Civil War, Marines began flying the United States’ flag alongside the Marine Corps’ scarlet and gold. Jenkins, 23, is a native of Orange County, Calif., and Perez, 20, is from Los Angeles.
