Military personnel are operating what appears to be a pontoon or ribbon bridge ferry system on a calm river in a wooded, hilly area. Three individuals are visible on the olive-drab military floating bridge sections, with one civilian in a red shirt and white hard hat among uniformed soldiers. The background shows a riverbank with military vehicles and equipment staged near the tree line.

Soldiers with the 1041st Engineer Company, Wyoming Army National Guard, dismantle an Improved Ribbon Bridge, or IRB, July 21, at the Guernsey Reservoir, in Wyoming. The Soldiers work under the supervision of civilian instructors from AM General, the bridge’s manufacturer, during the initial training and fielding process. The IRB replaces the Standard Ribbon Bridge, developed in the 1970s. The bridge, which can be turned into a raft, can carry a heavy equipment transport loaded with an M1A2 Abrams tank. The 1041st is based in armories in the Wyoming cities of Rock Springs, Evanston and Afton.
