USS SOMERSET, At sea – (Oct. 20, 2016) Cpl. Tyler Shaffran rehearses maneuvering through a makeshift low-light urban environment aboard the USS Somerset (LPD 25) Oct. 20, 2016.By operating in small teams and forward of their command, scout snipers are often relied upon to relay detailed information back to their unit, providing a unique capability outside of their traditional role as long-range precision marksmen. The Marines and Sailors of 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group recently said goodbye to their loved ones at their home port of San Diego to begin a seven-month deployment in the Pacific and Central Commands’ areas of operation. Shaffran is a rifleman and professionally instructed gunman, a precursor to attaining the scout sniper additional Military Occupational Specialty, with Battalion Landing Team, 1st Bn., 4th Marines, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
