USS SOMERSET, At sea – (Oct. 20, 2016) Cpl. Tyler Shaffran practices maneuvering through a makeshift low-light urban environment aboard the USS Somerset (LPD 25) Oct. 20, 2016. Aboard ship, Marines find creative ways to sustain their training and hone their skills to maintain a constant state of readiness while at sea. An integrated Marine Expeditionary Units and Amphibious Ready Group provide the U.S. and its allies with unique capabilities in response to crises ranging from disaster relief to combat, and there are at least two ARG/MEUs persistently patrolling the world’s littorals to answer these calls. Shaffran is a rifleman and professionally instructed gunman, a precursor to attaining the scout sniper additional Military Occupational Specialty, with Battalion Landing Team, 1st Bn., 4th Marines, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
