SGT John River, Delta Company, 578th Brigade Engineer Battalion, uses a GPS tracking device meant to provide safety to hand crews deployed on the fire line. Almost 400 California Army National Guard soldiers from the 578th BEB and the 40th Brigade Support Battalion are activated as hand crews for the Soberanes Fire in Monterey County.
