Almost 400 California Army National Guard soldiers from the 578th Brigade Engineer Batallion and the 40th Brigade Support Battalion deploy as hand crews during the Soberanes Fire in Monterey County. Soldiers live at the Toro County Park base camp in Salinas during their 29 day rotation. Crews travel on military vehicles to various drop points on the fire line, from Carmel to Big Sur, and work as fire fighters on 24 hour shifts to help contain the 70,000 acre fire by hiking miles into forest and mountain terrain and conducting mop operations.
