California Army National Guard's 578th Brigade Engineer Batallion and 40th Brigade Support Battalion deploy as hand crews in support of the Soberanes Fire in Monterey County. Crews travel on military vehicles to various drop points on the fire line, from Carmel to Big Sur, and work as fire fighters on 24 hour shifts to help contain the 70,000 acre fire by hiking miles into forest and mountain terrain and conducting mop operations.
