MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII – Joseph Bryan, the deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for Energy, speaks about the importance of the Wave Energy Test Site area to attendees of the projects's blessing ceremony near the French Battery bunker aboard Marine Corps Base Hawaii, July 26, 2016. Bryan oversees Department of the Navy policies on matters pertaining to operational and shore energy initiatives for the Secretary of the Navy. The site was blessed by a Hawaiian minister to protect the Wave Energy Conversions devices and the staff that work on the site. The WEC devices harness the energy from ocean waves, an abundant and renewable energy. The WEC devices near the base are currently in the prototype stage, but with more research and development can help provide electricity to impoverished coastal cities and military installations.
