John D. Trent, a Defense Commissary Agency contractor and motorcycle enthusiast living Japan, participates in an interview with a reporter from Stars and Stripes Pacific at U.S. Army Japan’s headquarters July 13, 2016, in Camp Zama, Japan. Trent, a seasoned rider with more than 35 years’ experience riding in Japan, witnessed the near death of his friend, Makoto Tanabe, when Tanabe’s bike collided along the sidewall of a small bridge. The accident, which occurred July 3, 2016, in Shizuoka Prefecture, nearly severed Tanabe’s left foot. Trent saved his friend’s life by using a bungee cord as a tourniquet, thereby stopping the bleeding and giving first responders precious time to evacuate his friend to the nearest hospital for emergency treatment. Tanabe is in stable condition with his foot reattached. (photo by Sgt. John L. Carkeet IV, U.S. Army Japan)
