John D. Trent (right), a Defense Commissary Agency contractor and motorcycle enthusiast living in Japan, shares lunch with his friend and fellow rider, Makoto Tanabe (left). Trent saved Tanabe’s life during a leisure group ride with the Hard and Fast international riding club July 3, 2016, around Shizuoka prefecture, Japan. While turning onto a bridge, Tanabe briefly lost control of his bike, hitting the bridge’s sidewall and nearly severing his left foot. Trent applied first aid by using a bungee cord as a tourniquet, thereby stopping the bleeding and giving first responders precious time to evacuate his friend to the nearest hospital to reattach his foot.
