    Airman 1st Class Joshua Kirkland, 340th Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron KC-135 Stratotanker boom operator, refuels an E-3 Sentry, Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft, Jan.15, over Afghanistan. The AWACS is an airborne radar system designed to detect and manage aircraft. The weapon system is used at high altitudes and can detect aircraft miles away.
