U.S. Army Col. Timothy M. Snyder, deputy commander, U.S. Army Reserve Engagement Team-Japan (ARET-J), observes Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) Reserve Component candidates participating in a weapons familiarization class conducted at Camp Takeyama, Japan, Nov. 20, 2015. JGSDF Lt. Col. Kenichi Hirohata, commander, 117th Training Battalion, JGSDF, invited Snyder and his team on a tour of Camp Takeyama while giving his guests a glimpse of how his battalion molds raw recruits into a dynamic self-defense force. Snyder and Hirohata also discussed future bilateral engagements that would immerse select JGSDF Reserve Component candidates to the U.S. Army's culture and capabilities through base tours and training events.
