During a Nov. 20, 2015, visit to Camp Takeyama, Japan, U.S. Army Col. Timothy M. Snyder, deputy commander, U.S. Army Reserve Engagement Team-Japan (ARET-J), speaks with senior leaders from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force about how to enhance its partnership between the U.S. Army Reserve and the JGSDF Reserve Component. Less than 24 hours earlier, ARET-J conducted a bilateral training mission in Camp Zama, Japan, that introduced JGSDF Reserve Component candidates seeking enlistment into Japan's esteemed language interpreter corps to the culture and capabilities of their U.S. Army allies. Snyder and his JGSDF hosts exchanged ideas on how to expand these bilateral engagements by inviting JGSDF Reserve candidates to participate in a U.S. Army Reserve unit's battle assembly weekend or assigning JGSDF physicians and nurses to work with their U.S. Army counterparts at Camp Zama's medical facilities.
