TAPAZ, Philippines — U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Jeremy Smith, assigned to the 9th Engineer Support Battalion, assists a schoolchild with a pull-up at Don Joaquin Artuz Memorial Elementary School in Tapaz, Philippines, during Balikatan 2015, April 25. Smith, a member of the Combined-Joint Civil-Military Operations Task Force on the island of Panay, entertained the children following their participation in a mural painting project on a new two-classroom building being constructed at the school by U.S Marine, Navy, and Armed Forces of the Philippines Army engineers. Balikatan, which means “shoulder to shoulder” in Filipino, is an annual bilateral training exercise aimed at improving the ability of Philippine and U.S. military forces to work together during planning, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.
