Matern, deputy commanding general of operations for the XVIII Airborne Corps, while the unit's sergeant major, Command Sgt. Maj. Edwin Perez, safeguards the 44th MEDCOM colors during a redeployment ceremony, which took place in the early morning hours of July 3 at Green Ramp on Pope Air Force Base, N.C. The 44th MEDCOM just returned from a 12 month deployment at Camp Victory, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
