Col. Cherry Gaffney, a neuro-pathologist from DeWitt Army Community Hospital at Fort Belvoir, Va., welcomes back her husband, Col. Louis Smith, with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 44th Medical Command, at Green Ramp on Pope Air Force Base, N.C., after nearly a year of separation in the early morning hours of July 3. Gaffney said it means everything in the world to have him home safe, and she missed him so much more than she thought she would. "It feels like life is just starting all over again," Gaffney said. The 44th MEDCOM was deployed to Camp Victory, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
