Maj. Matthew DeLoia, an artillery officer assigned as a Military Transition Team advisor to the 34th Armored Brigade, 9th Iraqi Army Division, examines the breech end of a firing tube on a M109A1 howitzer at Camp Taji. The howitzer was one of dozens of howitzers left rusting in a junkyard at Camp Taji, north of Baghdad, until the IA began refurbishing them. "As the IA shifts to more external defense and training for external enemies, then I think bringing artillery into their combat power will be important," said DeLoia, a native of Duluth, Minn.
