Former Army Lt. Cary Jarvis looks over historical artifacts, including photos and mementoes from his time in the 111th Field Artillery, Jan. 11, 2015, in the history room at the Virginia National Guard’s Norfolk readiness center. Soldiers from the unit prepared the room for his visit and ceremony where he received the French Legion of Honor, the highest decoration bestowed in France. Jarvis was honored for his actions on June 6, 1944, when he landed on the beaches of Normandy with the Virginia National Guard’s 111th Field Artillery Regiment, 29th Infantry Division.
