A group of approximately 9-10 adults are gathered in a semi-circle on a gravel surface, appearing to be engaged in a field briefing or site visit. One person in a plaid shirt is gesturing and appears to be speaking to the group. The setting is an open, flat landscape with grassland and a dense conifer forest in the background.

Stefan Haertl (lower left) addresses a group of environmental professionals and managers from various training and ecological departments in the U.S. Army, while explaining the land maintenance required by the Grafenwoehr Training Areas. The environmental division of the Grafenwoehr Training Area protects the soil, air and water of the land while supporting the Army’s training mission. This land has improved in its ecological condition long with the military training conducted here. 33 years ago, the U.S. Army started monitoring the conditions of their training areas in Europe. Today, 77 percent of these training lands are designated flora and fauna habitat. (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. Christopher Robertson)
