Rct. Tyler Lanum, an 18-year-old native of Martins Ferry, Ohio, is currently training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in hopes of earning the title of United States Marine. Lanum is training with Platoon 1081, Bravo Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate Nov. 1, 2013. Lanum said he wanted to be a Marine "to get something better out of life; to be a part of something bigger." Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
