U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Cynthia Haines and Dr. Brad Sturm, anthropologist, examine a piece of possible evidence from a screening station during a Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command mission. Dr. Sturm was the on-site recovery leader and Haines was assigned as a recovery noncommissioned officer as part of a 16-member specialized recovery team for more than 45 days searching for the remains of nine service members whose plane crashed during World War II. The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command conducts global search, recovery and laboratory operations to identify unaccounted-for Americans from past conflicts in order to support the Department of Defense's personnel accounting efforts.
