U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Cynthia Haines and U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Byron Davis shovel dirt into an excavator to finish out a unit during a Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command mission. The excavator was used to move the dirt to the screening stations were it would be sifted for possible remains and material evidence. Haines and Davis were part of a 16-member specialized recovery team for more than 45 days searching for the remains of nine service members whose plane crashed during World War II. The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command conducts global search, recovery and laboratory operations to identify unaccounted-for Americans from past conflicts in order to support the Department of Defense's personnel accounting efforts.
