Dawn of the Red Arrow follows the trajectory of the 32nd Division from the Mexican Border Crisis of 1916 through its training at Camp MacArthur near Waco, Texas in 1917 and across Europe in 1918. The division — composed of 15,000 Wisconsin National Guard Soldiers and another 8,000 from the Michigan National Guard — earned its nom de guerre “Les Terribles” for its fearsome battlefield prowess, and its insignia, a red arrow with a line through the middle, for piercing every German line it faced, including the formerly impenetrable Hindenburg Line (Kriemhilde Stellung). This document provides a narrative of a transformative time not only for our nation, but the National Guard.
