The Pentagram Mission
Pentagram – Penta – from the Greek “pente” = five (Pentagon – the five-sided building in Arlington, Virginia) and Gram – from the ancient Greek suffix “–gramma” = something written, drawn or otherwise recorded.
A Civilian Enterprise-contracted military newspaper in the broadsheet format, the Pentagram has been serving readers in the National Capital Region since 1957. The Pentagram officially became a joint military newspaper in May 2009 when the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure initiative became law. Because of the Pentagram’s audience and unique geographical setting in the nation’s capital, the Pentagram has long been a joint service publication.
The Pentagram is produced under the commercial enterprise provisions of Army Regulation 360-1 and DoD Instruction 5120.4; current distribution is 24,000 copies per week; a broadsheet, there are from 12 to 24 pages per week, distributed 50 Fridays a year. The current commercial enterprise printer is Comprint Military Publications, a division of Gazette Newspapers, Inc. and The Washington Post.
The Pentagram provides open, two-way communications between the Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall command and more than 150,000 active duty, reserve component and retired Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, U.S. Coast Guard members; their family members; and Department of Defense civilians across the National Capital Region.
