The US Navy continuously looks to history for lessons that can improve its warfighting edge in all domains. As the official custodian of US Navy history, the Naval History and Heritage Command collects, maintains, analyzes, and disseminates this resource. To showcase this capability, this volume features 18 articles, essays, and white papers produced by the command that leverage episodes from the past 250 years of Navy history in the pursuit of better appreciation of and solutions for current problems. It is ultimately through these shared experiences that history acts a force multiplier and contributes to the Navy and Marine Corps mission of projecting peace and strength throughout the world.  less

This volume presents a series of eight case studies to illustrate how the US Navy went about innovation amid the great power struggles of the twentieth century. The eight chapters cover nearly the full span of the twentieth century, ranging from the naval arms race prior to World War I to the Navy’s strategy renaissance of the 1980s. Presenting innovations achieved and implemented both during wartime and outside it, each case study provides examples of innovative changes in technology, doctrine, or strategy. During the Battle of Okinawa, American sailors confronted their most destructive enemy of the Pacific War: the kamikazes of the Imperial Japanese Special Attack Corps. Over the course of what quickly became the deadliest engagement ever fought by the U.S. Navy, American naval officers and their crews developed new tactics to counter the brutal onslaught of a suicidal enemy whose sole purpose was to demoralize the US fleet and inflict as many casualties as possible. Japanese military leaders viewed the kamikaze as their last hope to prevent US forces from reaching the home islands and compelling Japan’s unconditional surrender. Drawing on the accounts of enlisted sailors, this study sheds new light on the desperate struggle off Okinawa and the terrifying ordeal of men under the relentless assault of suicide attacks. Ultimately, American sailors’ tenacity and ability to adapt in order to win during World War II should serve as enduring inspiration to those serving in the U.S. Navy today.  less

Education is critical for warfighting readiness and effectiveness. In this volume, Tyler Pitrof traces the evolution of the US Navy’s approach to enlisted education from World War II to the present day. As demonstrated in this publication, since the 1970s, the Navy has generally considered its educational programs to be an incentive to enlist. However, advanced technology, like the Aegis Combat System, has dramatically increased the need for abstract thinking to augment traditional training. Educating the Bluejackets provides a succinct history of US Navy enlisted education policy and will enable personnel to use the cumulative insights of the past to help address the service’s future educational needs. Sixteenth Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy James M. Honea provided an incisive foreword to this volume.  less

This publication tells the stories of sailors who faced fear, chaos, and uncertainty and overcame them through skill, courage, and teamwork.
