EASTOVER, S.C. – Command Sgt. Maj. Jewell McCullough assumed command as the Commandant of the Noncommissioned Officers Academy, 218th Regiment (Leadership), South Carolina Army National Guard, during a ceremony July 25, 2012, at the McCrady Training Center in Eastover, S.C. She is the first female and first African American commandant in the schools history.
McCullough has a decorated military career in the 151st Signal Battalion, 228th Signal Brigade and has held positions of leadership that have prepared her for stepping up as the new commandant.
Since being the first female to enlist into Company D, 151st Signal Battalion in Ware Shoals, S.C. in 1983, McCullough has been accustomed to attaining recognition as being the first female in several leadership positions.
She said that being the first African American and the first female Commandant will be a rewarding experience. “Noncommissioned officers embrace the Army values that we enforce today. I was mentored by some of the best leaders over the years which allowed me to nurture my own leadership skills.”
She is prepared for the position of Commandant and her top priority is maintaining the regiment accreditation rating. “This regional training institute was awarded the ‘Institution of Excellence’ during the last accreditation cycle. I want to ensure that we not only maintain our reputation, but also improve throughout the entire organization.”
