NACO, Honduras – Sgt. Maj. Scott Mayer, a Lee’s Summit native, is looking forward to finishing strong as one of the few duration soldiers who have been on site since mid-March for the Beyond the Horizons 2012 Honduras-mission.

Mayer, a Missouri National Guardsman and the Task Force Tropic sergeant major has seen multiple rotations come and go, and has handled each of them with the same attitude.

“With every rotation there is a learning curve,” said Mayer, who is a member of the 35th Engineer Brigade out of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. “You have to get the soldiers housed, get them fed and make sure they are getting to where they are supposed to be on a daily basis.”

Mayer serves both as the Task Force Tropic sergeant major as well as the operations sergeant major.

Needless to say, he stays quite busy, all day, every day.

“We only have about a day or two to get things ready when units rotate in and out,” Mayer said. “So we are always busy trying to make sure the soldiers coming in have everything they need to be mission-ready.”

Mayer oversees all the trip tickets that are submitted for personnel to move to and from the forward operating base. Along with that, he is one of the faces greeting new soldiers when they arrive on base - as he gives part of the in-brief that all soldiers must go through once they arrive in country for their two-week training exercise.

“We have had a few bumps in the road, but overall it has been a successful mission,” Mayer said. “Everyone on staff here has worked really hard to make sure the soldiers are taken care of.”

Beyond the Horizon Honduras is an Army South led exercise and is part of U.S. Southern Command humanitarian and civic assistance program where U.S. Army engineers working with host nation personnel build medical clinics and schoolhouses for the local Hondurans.

Medical staff including U.S. Air Force personnel, nurses from Colombia, and even doctors from the Canadian army have also been busy working at various MEDRETE sites, giving needed medical treatment to local Hondurans who normally would not have access to it.

“I think what we are doing down here is great, especially the training the soldiers are receiving,” Mayer said. “Coming down here and working with the people will be very beneficial to the soldiers who do so.”

Mayer credits the entire task force leadership team, led by Lt. Col. Robert Jones who is a member of the 1140th Engineer Battalion out of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and the effort they have continued to put in throughout the duration of BTH 2012.

“Lt. Col. Jones has assembled a great team here,” Mayer said. “I’m glad to be a part of it.”

As the end of the BTH mission comes to a close, with less than 30 days remaining, Mayer stresses continued hard work.

“We’ve got a couple weeks left here and we need to continue to work to make sure the mission is successfully completed,” Mayer said. “The engineering projects are more than 70 percent done, and we also have a dental clinic for the last rotation, so we need to continue to have great success.”
