NACO, Honduras – For the Adams twins, the word family means a little bit more, especially when you are thousands of miles away from home.

For Spc. Julia Adams and Pfc. Madeline Adams, both engineers with the 1223rd Engineer Company out of Summerville, South Carolina, South Carolina National Guard, the bond of sisterhood is stronger than ever, as both are serving their two-week annual training in support of the Beyond the Horizons 2012 Honduras-mission.

“This experience as a whole has been great, but to share it with her has made it even better,” Madeline said.

Julia also feels that her time on the BTH mission wouldn’t be the same without her other half, but added that having family work alongside you can have its ups and downs - especially when you are temporarily separated.

“There are pros and cons to having a sister to work with down here,” Julia said. “I love working with her and I love the fact that we get to do this together, but when she was at another jobsite this past week, I couldn’t help but think about her and worry. It’s just a natural sisterly feeling you get.”

The Adams twins are just two of the many soldiers taking part in the BTH mission.

Beyond the Horizon Honduras is an Army South led exercise and is part of U.S. Southern Command humanitarian assistance program. U.S. Army engineers working with host nation personnel are building medical clinics and schoolhouses for the local Hondurans.

The sisters have primarily been working at the Quimistan site, working on putting the roof on a medical facility that is currently being built, as well as pouring concrete for a sidewalk to surround the building, and working on interior projects such as plumbing.

Both of them feel the work being done here is something special.

“I think it’s great what we are able to do for the Honduran people down here,” Julia said. “It’s not every day that you can get to work and do something for like this.”

BTH-Honduras has military engineers and medical professionals conducting training, while providing services to rural communities.

That training is something Madeline is a big fan of.

“We don’t get to do a lot of hands-on type of training like this back home,” she said. “We really have enjoyed being able to do our job and to learn new things like putting up roofs - it definitely gives you great experience to take back with you.”

Even though Julia and Madeline might be the only soldiers related by blood here, both soldiers feel like family comes first in the National Guard.

“Our unit and I think the National Guard as a whole is really great, we are all so close, definitely a family working together,” Madeline said.

Her sister Julia added, “It’s always good working with family, and to me, that’s what we are.”

The Adams twins are set to finish their rotation in the BTH mission at the end of this week, and Honduras will welcome a new batch of National Guard engineers to help put the finishing touches on the various project sites that were started back in April.
