OKINAWA, Japan - High atop Camp Hansen’s rappel tower, members of the Marine Corps Bases Japan Fire Department were taught and tested on how to prepare, or “rig” a rappel wall, skid, fast rope and tie knots last month.
The Japanese members of the MCBJ Fire Department received this training to safely rappel and rescue victims during a fire or other hazardous situations.
“We taught them how to rig a system and tie the knots so they would be able to perform high-angle rescues,” said Sgt. Brandon T. Gayle, a helicopter rope suspension techniques instructor with Special Operations Training Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group, III MEF. “They were tested on setting, dressing and tying under time.”
Sergeants Sebastian R. Ugalde and John W. Hooser III and Cpl. Matthew M. Woody, HRST masters with SOTG, also taught and tested the firefighters.
The firefighters practiced tying square, water/tape, double fisherman’s, bowline and clove-hitch knots, each within the time limit of 30 seconds.
Masanori Goya and Manabu Nakasone, firefighters with MCBJ Fire Department, both agreed the session provided useful skills that will benefit them in the future.
According to Woody, the training could also be helpful in strengthening ties with local Japanese. During the training, the Marines have taught the Japanese firefighters new and valuable skills.
Goya said that after this lesson the Marines and Japanese firefighters will be able to rappel from the top of a building safely in support of any rescue operation.
