SAN DIEGO (Aug. 11, 2026) – Leadership from Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD), alongside key partners from the Defense Health Agency (DHA), Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC), and Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego, gathered today for a structural steel topping-out and beam-signing ceremony, marking a major milestone in the construction of the installation's new Branch Health Clinic.
Sponsored by the project’s contractor, RQ-DPR Construction, the informal ceremony allowed attendees to sign their names to the structural beam before it was hoisted and secured as the highest point of the new facility.
Capt. Jerry J. Bailey, NMCSD director, praised the collaborative effort and the rapid pace of the construction, which brings the critical medical facility one step closer to completion.
"The dedication and commitment of this construction crew to supporting our warfighters has been absolutely phenomenal, especially as they continue to operate ahead of schedule," said Bailey. "NMCSD is fully committed to our Marines, and we are dedicated to ensuring they receive the highest quality care in the finest medical facilities."
The new clinic is designed to be a state-of-the-art environment that unifies care and enhances medical readiness. Once complete, it will provide integrated, world-class medical and dental care to recruits, Marines, and Sailors serving at MCRD San Diego.
Cmdr. Joselyn Mercado-Abadie, officer in charge of Branch Health Clinic MCRD San Diego, highlighted what the milestone represents for the depot’s force-generation mission.
“This milestone brings us closer to a facility that will unite medical and dental care under one roof,” said Mercado-Abadie. “By streamlining and integrating care, we can better support MCRD’s mission to transform recruits into ready Marines and strengthen the readiness of the force.”
The event concluded with a milestone celebration, reflecting a shared promise across all involved agencies to ensure that the Marine Corps fighting force remains resilient and ready for the future.
NMCSD employs more than 5,600 active-duty military personnel, civilians, and contractors in southern California to deliver exceptional care afloat and ashore.
