CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Far East District (USACE FED) officially turned over a $130 million Unaccompanied Enlisted Personnel Housing (UEPH) barracks project to U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys, July 8, 2026.
“We are glad to add these new barracks to our inventory, but our work is really just starting,” said Samuel L. Brooks, Chief, Housing Division, Directorate of Public Works (DPW), USAG Humphreys. “While the construction is finished, our housing team is busy behind the scenes getting every room fully furnished and move-in ready.”
In partnership with the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of National Defense – Defense Institution Agency (MND DIA), the district built the barracks to support Camp Humphreys’ warfighters in upgraded housing and ensure mission readiness.
The finished project includes three towers, each of which can house more than 300 military personnel. This fall, another four towers under a separate project are scheduled for completion as well, accommodating more than 2,100 service members in total across the seven facilities.
These suite-style facilities offer private and shared spaces that promote comfort and connection. Each two-bedroom suite includes a kitchenette and a shared bathroom, with washers and dryers available on every floor. There are also common areas next to the elevators where Soldiers can add couches and furniture. Outside amenities include multipurpose recreation courts, bike racks, gazebos and barbecue shelters to enhance the military community.
To ensure quality delivery, contractors and the district’s personnel put in more than 2 million man-hours combined for both projects.
Nathan Han, resident engineer, Resident Office, USACE FED said that during his six years of working on various barracks projects, the baseline design standard has remained the same. But, the district executed subtle enhancements to improve the practicality and the warfighters’ quality of life for these new facilities.
“For example, we increased the number of dryers compared to washers after receiving feedback that there were not enough dryers available for residents,” Han said. “The ability to make these improvements and enhance the quality of life for our warfighters is what makes engineering and construction rewarding.”
Other changes influenced by lessons learned from previous barracks projects across Camp Humphreys include enhanced air circulation, updated outdoor equipment and solutions to ongoing maintenance issues.
“After a barracks are turned over, we often learn what works well and what does not, and those lessons are incorporated into future projects,” Han said.
With the construction and design phases completed, the next step is outfitting the three eight-story towers with furniture, security locks and other furnishings.
“It takes a few months to get everything set up, but these modern facilities are going to provide the high quality of life our Soldiers deserve here at Camp Humphreys,” Brooks said.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is projected for later this year.
