U.S. and top European navy leaders tackled a range of important issues – such as joint combined interoperability and the evolution of warfare – at the U.S. Naval War College Regional Alumni Symposium, hosted by the Polish Navy in Gdynia, Poland, from March 29-April 1.

"Warfare is more complex than ever before," said Vice Adm. J. T. Anderson, U.S. 6th Fleet Commander. "This event offers a platform to work with our partners and allies to get ahead of the challenges we face. We need to look out across all domains - air, surface, undersea, land and space - and across vast networks of key infrastructure that maintain not only our fighting forces, but our economies and communities back home. Together, we're developing resilience to maximize combat effectiveness.”

In a March 31 panel discussion, Anderson was joined by Vice Adm. Jaroslaw Janusz Ziemianski, Inspector of the Polish Navy; Rear Adm. Tuomas Tiilikainen, Commander of the Finnish Navy; and Rear Adm. Maris Polencs, Commander of the Latvian Navy, to discuss gray zone and hybrid threats to critical maritime infrastructure.

"The discussions we're having at this event – such as Vice Adm. Anderson's panel discussion on threats to critical undersea infrastructure – are extremely relevant in today's world,” said NWC President Rear Adm. Darryl Walker. “The U.S. Naval War College is at the nexus between our forces on the front lines and our top operational problem solvers. We're uniquely positioned to assemble the right people, analyze the latest lessons learned, provide cutting edge insight, and train the next wave of warfighters to be ready for anything they may encounter on the battlefield." Other presentations and panel discussions included talks on the changing character of warfare technology; military innovation and standardization across allies; and mine countermeasures, among other topics.

Held approximately annually, NWC regional alumni symposia are co-hosted with regional partner navies and are open to all international and U.S. graduates of the college. The most recent previous such symposium was held in 2024 in Goa, India.

At the 2026 symposium in Poland, more than 90 military officers, including at least 60 NWC alumni, from 19 European and North American nations attended.

Established in 1884, NWC informs today’s decision-makers and educates tomorrow’s leaders by providing educational experiences and learning opportunities that develop their ability to anticipate and prepare strategically for the future, strengthen the foundations of peace, and create a decisive warfighting advantage.
