Groundbreaking ceremony for new small arms qualification range

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The 181st Intelligence Wing conducted a groundbreaking ceremony signaling that construction is underway on the new small arms qualification range at Terre Haute Air National Guard Base Nov. 13, 2025.

The new facility marks a major milestone for the wing, providing on-base training for nearly 900 Airmen and streamlining qualification requirements for security forces, civil engineers, contingency response members and personnel preparing for overseas deployment.

“Having the CATM (Combat Arms Training and Maintenance) facility on base will enable us to train more consistently and efficiently,” says Maj. Joseph Williams, commander of the 181st Security Forces Squadron.

Currently, personnel rely on off-base ranges, which require travel, setup, and coordinating schedules with limited availability. The on-base facility will save time and resources, allow for specialized training in low-visibility conditions and provide an integrated classroom space for weapons familiarization and qualification in a single location.

The project has been a priority for nearly a decade, made possible through the efforts of the wing’s civil engineers, Indiana Joint Forces Headquarters, state leadership and congressional support.

Construction is progressing on schedule, with range walls expected to be completed by winter and full completion projected for spring 2027. The facility will feature a 10-lane range, classroom space, weapons vault and weapons cleaning area, accommodating larger groups and flexible training schedules without the need for off-base travel.

This will be the first purpose-built facility at Terre Haute ANG Base since 1997, marking a significant enhancement to the wing’s operational capabilities and readiness.
