    Fire Prevention Week 2025
GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- For over a century, Fire Prevention Week has served as an annual national initiative to educate the public about fire safety. This year’s proclamation declaring the start of Fire Prevention Week 2025, was signed by Col. Matthew Norton, 17th Training Wing commander, Oct. 6.

The week-long event centers around a theme of potential fire hazards. This year’s theme was, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home”.

“Lithium-ion batteries store a large amount of energy in a small space,” said Norton. “Improper use such as overcharging, using off brand chargers without safety certification or exposing batteries to damage can result in fire or explosion.”

Fire departments across the nation, from Alaska to the tip Florida, use this week to promote fire prevention measures through community engagements.

The family-friendly events offer crucial fire safety tips, empower children with the knowledge and skill set for navigating active fires, and how to contact emergency services from a safe location.

As a part of the week-long effort, Goodfellow Fire Department held their annual fire competition muster on Oct. 10, featuring seven teams vying for the top spot on a six-stage obstacle course. Team "Turkeys" emerged victorious in the competition, which simulated demanding physical tasks commonly performed by firefighters.
