The Ramage Award was created to honor aircraft carriers and air wings demonstrating the best integrated performance and oper¬ational excellence in the fleet. Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), or “IKE” and Carrier Air Wing Three (CVW 3) are the 2024 winners. The IKE and CVW-3 are no strangers when it comes to winning this remarkable achievement. This marks the pair’s fifth time earning this historic accolade, which makes them the most recog¬nized aircraft carrier and air wing receiving this honor since its inception.
Rear Adm. James D. Ramage, callsign “Jig Dog” was considered one of the most daring and unconventional Navy aircraft commanders of World War II. After graduating from the Naval Academy in 1939, he served on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CV 6). He played an important role in combat during the war, notably the Battle of the Philippine Sea in 1944, where he led the USS Parche (SSN 683) in a daring predawn surface attack against a heavily escorted Japanese convoy off Takao, Taiwan, Ramage also served as the navigator of the escort carrier USS Bairoko (CVE 115), as well as Commanding Officer of Bombing Squadron 98.
IKE’s 2023-2024 deployment was a historic nine-month combat cruise spanning the U.S. 5th and 6th fleet areas of operation demonstrating unmatched coordination, and adaptability in action throughout the Red Sea. IKE’s key achievements included more than 13,800 sorties flown and more than 31,400 flight hours logged executing continuous operations in contested environments, including the Red Sea, Arabian Gulf, and Eastern Mediterranean, demonstrating precision strikes on target while maintaining strict safety standards, and defense against unmanned aerial and surface threats, ensuring the safety of critical international trade routes.
IKE and CVW-3 earned the Navy Unit Commendation medal and Combat Action Ribbon for operational achievements during the deployment, further underscoring excellence and recognition with the 2024 award. The ship’s company and embarked squadrons showcased discipline, innovation, and endurance which represents the Jig Dog Ramage Legacy.
For nine months, IKE and CVW-3 operated at the tip of the spear in some of the world’s most strategically sensitive waters. Their combat success embodies the spirit of Rear Adm. “Jig Dog” Ramage’s namesake award.
