    Story by Sgt. Ariana Lippert

    12th Marine Corps District

U.S. Marine Corps Pvt. Hector SevillaOrnelas, a 25-year-old local from Moreno Valley, California, was working at a Farmer Boys restaurant when a friend grabbed him by the shoulders and asked him to join the military service with him. From there, they both began talking to military recruiters and eventually, SevillOrneals found himself in Marine Corps Recruiting Sub-station (RSS) Moreno Valley, talking to his recruiter, Staff Sgt. Alexander Aburto, about what his future could look like if he joined the Marine Corps. A few of the biggest draws that the Marine Corps offered and distinguished it from other branches for SevillasOrneals were the financial benefits, honor, and commitment that came with becoming a Marine.

Despite his eagerness to join, Pvt. SevillasOrneals faced challenges as he prepared for the Marine Corps. One of those challenges included not meeting the weight requirement to qualify him for boot camp. When he first stepped into his recruiter's office, SevillasOrneals weighed 241 pounds. He had to lose a lot of weight, but was determined to meet his goal of earning the title, Marine, so he met the Marines of RSS Moreno Valley in the office every morning to work out and lose weight.

“He always had the willingness to train and had a lot of heart.” said Staff Sgt. Bobby Hildebrand, a Marine recruiter with RSS Moreno Valley.

After months of morning workouts, Pvt. SevillaOrnelas finally met the weight standard and shipped to boot camp on Oct. 24, 2022 where he reported to Bravo Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruiting Depot San Diego. SevillaOrnelas faced many challenges while at boot camp, but every time he became anxious he would remember the advice that his recruiter, Gunnery Sgt. Weston Sherwood, gave him to succeed, "be fast, be loud, and have heart."

The moment he got his first letter from his family four weeks into boot camp, ServillaOrneals knew he was going to do everything he could to make his family proud and become a Marine. When he graduated boot camp, his whole family was there to congratulate him on his great accomplishment.

As Pvt. SevillaOrnelas is waiting to go to Marine Combat Training to become a supply administration and operations specialist, he is spending as much time with his family as he can. Pvt. Sevilla now weighs 189 pounds, and feels the pride and confidence that comes with being a Marine.
