Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 14 held a change of command ceremony at Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport, Jan. 29.

Cmdr. Orrick Haney relieved Capt. Kevin Coyne as Commanding Officer of NMCB-14 in a traditional ceremony presided by guest speaker, Capt. David Duttlinger, Commodore 7th Naval Construction Regiment.

“We all know what a difficult task it has been to govern and lead during the last two years,” said Duttlinger. “We’ve had to adopt to constantly changing conditions meeting ever growing threats to our Nation, both externally and internally. “You have achieved the highest command climate for the Atlantic Seabees, established your Command as the ready battalion, deployed two back-to-back task tailored detachments, and you did all this while facing a worldwide pandemic—and you did it all with utmost character and with a smile on your face.”

Coyne assumed command of NMCB-14 in Nov. 2019. Under his command, NMCB 14 mobilized two air detachments, Detachment Delta (Det D) and Detachment Echo (Det E). NMCB 14’s Det D mobilized 87 Seabees in support of two combatant commands (COCOM). NMCB 14’s Det E mobilized 86 members, completing work on more than ten sites and five countries in support of two COCOMs. NMCB-14 was selected as the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command’s, Battle E recipient for fiscal year 2020.

“My success comes from my reliance upon many, many individuals,” said Coyne. “That brought me a peace of mind—working with such a talented group of people, and I am grateful for their efforts. To the men and women of NMCB-14, I couldn’t be more proud of you. You gave me chance, you followed my lead.”

Coyne concluded his remarks by stressing to his fellow Seabees not to hesitate to ask for help for fear of consequence to their careers.

“I sought assistance when I came back from Iraq,” said Coyne. “It is in my record. I still was selected for command and promoted to O-6. Seeking help if you need it, and taking a knee before that bubble bursts, will not harm your career. Take care of yourself, take care of your family.”

Upon taking command of the battalion, Haney expressed his gratitude for those who served before him.

“I intend to continue in the drive toward continuous improvement to be better each and every day,” said Haney. “Our goal as leaders should be to continually invest our time into the Seabees, our Navy, and our Country in honor of those that have made the sacrifices for us to be here.”
NMCB-14 is tasked with providing advance base construction, battle damage repair, contingency engineering, humanitarian assistance, and disaster recovery support to fleet and unified commanders.
