    Patrol Squadron (VP) 10

MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan— The “Red Lancers” of Patrol Squadron (VP) 10 enjoyed the distinct honor of hosting and flying with Rear Adm. Lance Scott, Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Group (CPRG) / Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Group Pacific (CPRG-P) during his trip to Misawa Air Base, June 14th through June 18th 2021.

Scott was eager to share his knowledge and experience with all Commander, Task Force (CTF) 72 Sailors to include VP-10 and Mobile Tactical Operation Center (MTOC) 9. With his finger on the pulse of maritime aviation, Scott is uniquely situated to be able to provide a thorough overview of the state of affairs within the Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Force.

CPRG’s mission is to ensure optimum and uniform training, readiness and effective command, control and coordination of 12 land-based, operational multi-mission capable patrol squadrons, two reserve patrol squadrons, one fleet replacement training squadron, one operational special projects unit, one special reconnaissance squadron, one unmanned patrol squadron, and operational task unit commands.

During Scott’s visit, Sailors from the command took the chance to interact with the leader of the Maritime Patrol community on a professional level, benefitting from his extensive military experience.

Scott also took the time to lead a conversation with VP-10 and CTF-72 Sailors concerning the Sailor 360 program, as well as the Navy’s Learning and Development Roadmap (LaDR). Sailor 360 is the Navy’s newest leadership training program designed to enrich the professional development of its enlisted force and officer corps, while LaDR’s focus is to standardize a program Navy-wide by featuring the existing skills necessary to be successful in the Navy.

“Sailors are our greatest asset, so the Navy takes great care in simplifying the route to success to better enable our men and women to make the most of their careers,” said Scott.

Additionally, the officer cadre of VP-10 enjoyed the opportunity to invite Rear Adm. Scott to join the Wardroom for dinner and engage in professional development. Conversation topics included the Navy’s Fitness Report process, optimal career progression, detailing, future capabilities of the P-8A, peer leadership, difficult decisions, and creating and optimizing mentorship opportunities.

For Scott, the highlight of his visit centered around joining the “Red Lancers” for an operational intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) flight in theater. During the flight, the P-8A demonstrated its multi-mission capabilities, most notably its long on station times supplemented through aerial refueling operations. Scott witnessed firsthand the precise airmanship of VP-10’s pilots in the complex event, showcasing how important the training and joint planning facilitates these critical support evolutions.

“My fellow ‘Red Lancers’ and I are honored by Rear Adm. Scott’s visit,” said Cmdr. John Houston, commanding officer of VP-10. “Anytime a commander takes the time to travel across the world and synchronize with their units, Sailors are shown how much they matter to the Navy and our country,” he said.

The VP-10 “Red Lancers” are based in Jacksonville, Florida, and currently operating out of Misawa Air Force Base, Japan. The squadron is conducting maritime patrol and reconnaissance as well as theatre outreach operations as part of a rotational deployment to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations.
