PITTSBURGH – Cast-iron Olympic weight plates, weight vests and half-empty water gallons decorate the field during a workout for future Navy Special Operations and Special Warfare (NSO/NSW) program candidates. As they engage in a grueling series of exercises, they are under a watchful eye.

Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Malique Graham, an NSO/NSW scout assigned to Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Pittsburgh, is a towering force. Graham has been at NTAG Pittsburgh for 18 months and has been a part of the Navy Warrior Challenge Program for the past year.

“It’s my job to make sure I do everything I can to put these guys in the best possible position to succeed, and get whatever contract it is that they are looking for under the Naval Special Operations/Naval Special Warfare umbrella,” Graham said.

Born in South Bend, Indiana, Graham spent a majority of his life in Texas, joining the Navy in 2014 out of the city of Harlingen.

“For me, joining the Navy was a change that I needed,” said Graham. “The reason I joined was a personal desire to be better. I think it could be very easy to be stuck in the weeds of day-to-day life, and I was looking for something that I felt would challenge me consistently on a daily basis, so that's why I did it. When it comes down to it, joining the Navy was one of the best decisions I ever made.”

Graham is no stranger to motivating a team mentally and physically. The 6-foot-6 high school football player pulls from his past experiences to challenges his future Sailors to be their very best. Seeing those under his leadership reach their goals has been the most rewarding aspect of Graham’s work during this past year.

“I think the biggest thing for me with this job is seeing the progress from day one until the day when I get to make the phone call to tell them they’ve been selected for whatever program it is that they are pursuing,” Graham said. “It’s a lot of hard work. I’m not easy on them, but I think it's one of those situations where if you trust the process and you give it everything you have, the reward will come.”

Navy Recruiting Command consists of a command headquarters, three Navy Recruiting Regions, and 26 Navy Talent Acquisition Groups that serve more than 1,000 recruiting stations across the world. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
