April is recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention month across the United States.
The day-to-day mission of the Osan Air Base’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response office is to educate, advocate and collaborate to respond to and stop sexual assault and its harmful effects within the Air Force.
Throughout the month of April, Osan’s SAPR office will be hosting various events to help build awareness about its importance.
Col. Henry Jeffress, 51st Fight Wing vice commander, signed a proclamation encouraging everyone to be part of the solution.
The proclamation states,
“April commemorates National Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention Month and reaffirms our commitment to eradicate sexual assault and sexual harassment in our ranks and in our military communities.
“The 2021 ongoing DoD SAAPM theme is “Protecting Our People Protects Our Mission.” Together, we can work to further reduce, with the goal to eliminate, sexual assault from the armed forces. Our military is the most trusted institution in America and our Service members have signed a blank check to the American people, payable with their lives.
“We all have a part to play in combating sexual assault and this month is the perfect opportunity to refocus our efforts. We can demonstrate social courage by identifying and taking actions against situations that pose a risk for sexual harassment and sexual assault.
“Command teams are key to creating a climate free of sexual violence by setting, exemplifying, and enforcing standards of discipline. Additionally, it is the responsibility of all leaders, Airmen and civilians to ensure we foster a culture that rejects harmful patterns of behavior. Every service member, at every level in our military, must adhere to and internalize our service’s core values and standards of behavior. We must continue to lead the charge by confronting and changing destructive attitudes.
“To protect our most valued asset, we need all Team Osan members to commit to ending sexual violence by educating yourself, family, friends, co-workers and community on prevention efforts, intervention techniques and response services. In doing so, we can establish a healthy standard of conduct within our community and ensure the safety of all our wingmen.”
If you or someone you know has been the victim of sexual assault, please call the Osan SAPR 24-hour hotline at DSN: 784-7272 or Comm: 031-661-7272. Their office is located in building 937 room 114 - or victims can call the Department of Defense Safe Hotline at 877-995-5247.
